Missy Seligman Hawes, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, IBCLC
Missy is excited to meet you where you are on your educational journey and grow in your application of knowledge. Her goal is to make learning easy and fun! Pediatrics was a difficult topic for her to learn while in graduate school and she wants to change that for others so they can experience the joy of working with children and families.
Missy graduated from the University of Louisville with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1997. She was also a member of the U of L field hockey team while in nursing school, and truly learned time management skills. As a registered nurse, she cared for patients in different settings- cardiac acute care, transitional care and home health (her favorite).
She graduated from Spalding University with her Master of Science in Nursing- Family Nurse Practitioner in 2001. She has cared for patients in a pediatric primary care clinic since 2001. Missy feels the best part of pediatrics is the continuity of care and watching the patients and families grow. She believes earning patients’ trust and being a part of their lives is a privilege. She became an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2010 and enjoys teaching moms and babies how to breastfeed. She started the lactation program for patients at the clinic she was working. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Spalding University in 2017. Her quality improvement project was Screening for Postpartum Depression in the Pediatric Primary Care Setting. She is passionate about identifying perinatal mood disorders early on for moms and families so they can get the help they need.
She has been an Assistant Professor at Spalding University in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program since 2010 and the Program Coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program since 2020. She has taught courses: Advanced Health Assessment, Child and Adolescent Primary Care, and Nurse Practitioner Practicum (pediatric focus).
She is married to Steve, who is an assistant principal at a high school and has taught for many years. Missy has two teenage sons who she is very proud of every day. She enjoys running, cycling and growing her succulent collection. She also enjoys eating her husband’s cooking.
